Diyawanna

Diyawanna is a local name commonly used for the Diyawanna Oya, a watercourse in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. The name is Sinhala in origin and is used to refer to the river and its surrounding waters.

The Diyawanna Oya rises in the central highlands, flows westward through the Colombo District, and passes near Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the administrative capital of Sri Lanka.

The Parliament of Sri Lanka is situated along the Diyawanna Oya. The riverside area incorporates landscaped water features, embankments and promenades that form part of the government complex.

Over the years, the Diyawanna Oya and its environs have been modified through flood-control and urban development projects. The watercourse supports local ecosystems but faces pressures from pollution, sedimentation and encroachment.
