Divisordefinition

Divisordefinition refers to the formal mathematical notion of a divisor. A divisor of an integer n is any integer d for which there exists an integer q with n = dq.

In many contexts, only positive divisors are listed. For example, the positive divisors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

The divisor function d(n) counts positive divisors. If n = p1^a1 ... pk^ak is the prime factorization of n, then d(n) = (a1+1)(a2+1)...(ak+1).

Divisors come in pairs: d and n/d. The product of all positive divisors of n > 1 equals n^{tau(n)/2}, where tau(n) is the number of divisors of n.

In algebra, a divisor of an element x in a ring R is an element a such that x = ab for some b in R. In noncommutative settings, one may distinguish left and right divisors, and definitions can vary accordingly.
