Distortionhäviöitä, a Finnish term, translates to "distortion losses" and refers to unwanted alterations in an audio signal's waveform that are not part of the original sound. These losses can manifest in various ways, including clipping, harmonic distortion, and intermodulation distortion, each affecting the audio quality differently.

Clipping occurs when the amplitude of an audio signal exceeds the maximum capacity of the system, causing the peaks of the waveform to be flattened. This results in a harsh, sometimes crackling sound. Harmonic distortion is introduced when new frequencies, which are integer multiples of the original signal's frequencies, are added to the audio. While some harmonic distortion can be perceived as pleasant, excessive amounts can make the audio sound muddy or unnatural. Intermodulation distortion arises when two or more frequencies interact within a nonlinear system, creating new frequencies that are the sum and difference of the original frequencies. This can lead to a complex and often unpleasant coloration of the sound.
