Diisokyanát

Diisokyanát refers to a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of two isocyanate functional groups (-N=C=O). These molecules are highly reactive due to the electrophilic nature of the carbon atom in the isocyanate group, which readily undergoes addition reactions with nucleophiles, particularly those containing active hydrogen atoms like alcohols and amines.

The reactivity of diisokyanát makes them essential building blocks in the polymer industry. Their most significant application is in the production of polyurethanes, a versatile group of plastics found in foams, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers. In this process, diisokyanát reacts with polyols (compounds with multiple hydroxyl groups) to form urethane linkages, creating long polymer chains.

Common examples of diisokyanát include toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). These are produced on a large scale and are vital for various industrial and consumer products. However, diisokyanát are also known for their potential health hazards. Exposure to vapors or aerosols can cause respiratory irritation, asthma-like symptoms, and skin sensitization. Proper handling procedures, including adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment, are crucial when working with these chemicals. Due to their reactivity, they are typically stored and transported under controlled conditions to prevent unwanted reactions.
