Defektif

Defektif is an adjective used in Indonesian and Malay to describe something that contains defects or is not functioning as intended. In quality control, items designated as defektif are subject to inspection, repair, replacement, or recall. In commerce and consumer protection contexts, a defektif item typically triggers warranty coverage or a consumer claim process. The opposite concept is berfungsi baik, meaning functioning properly.

The word defektif derives from the French défectif, from Latin defectus, and likely entered Indonesian through Dutch or English. In dictionaries it is defined as mengandung cacat or tidak berfungsi secara sempurna, reflecting its emphasis on imperfection or malfunction.

In linguistic and scholarly contexts, the term defektif is used less consistently. When it appears, it may describe words or forms that lack certain inflectional or derivational possibilities. However, this usage is not universal, and many traditions prefer the English term defective or locale-specific terminology to describe such grammatical phenomena.
