Defäkografie

Defäkografie is a diagnostic imaging technique used to evaluate anorectal function, specifically the mechanics of defecation. It involves fluoroscopic or X-ray imaging of the rectum and anal canal during defecation. The procedure typically requires the patient to ingest a radiopaque contrast agent, which is then expelled during a bowel movement. This allows physicians to visualize the passage of stool and assess various aspects of the defecation process.

During a defäkografie, patients may be asked to perform specific maneuvers, such as straining, holding their breath, and relaxing their anal sphincter. This helps to identify abnormalities in rectal emptying, anal pressure, and pelvic floor coordination. Common indications for defäkografie include chronic constipation, fecal incontinence, rectal prolapse, and obstructed defecation.

The imaging captures dynamic information about the anorectum, revealing potential issues such as incomplete evacuation, rectocele (a bulge of the rectum into the vagina), intussusception (a telescoping of the bowel), or inadequate relaxation of the puborectalis muscle.
