Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan, is a federal subject of Russia located in the North Caucasus. It is the southernmost and westernmost federal subject of Russia, and the largest republic in the North Caucasus by area. The republic's territory is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, the republic of Azerbaijan to the south, Chechnya and Stavropol Krai to the west, and Kalmykia to the north.
