DVIR

DVIR stands for Driver Vehicle Inspection Report. It is a document completed by a commercial motor vehicle driver before and after operating a vehicle. The purpose of the DVIR is to ensure vehicle safety by having drivers identify and report any defects or issues that could affect the safe operation of the vehicle. This process is mandated by regulations, such as those from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in the United States.

The pre-trip inspection, part of the DVIR process, involves the driver thoroughly examining the vehicle for potential problems. This includes checking critical components like brakes, tires, lights, steering, and other safety-related systems. If any defects are found, the driver must record them on the DVIR. The driver then certifies that the vehicle is in safe operating condition or notes the identified defects.

Following the trip, a post-trip inspection is also conducted. This ensures that any issues that may have arisen during the journey are identified and documented. If repairs were made based on a pre-trip inspection, the post-trip inspection serves as a verification that the repairs were completed and the vehicle is now safe. Carriers are required to maintain DVIR records for a specified period, demonstrating their commitment to vehicle maintenance and driver safety. Electronic DVIRs are increasingly being adopted, streamlining the process and improving record-keeping efficiency.
