DNAinnehållet refers to the total amount of DNA present in a cell or an organism. It is often measured in picograms (pg) or in base pairs (bp). The DNA content can vary significantly between different species and even between different cell types within the same organism. For example, somatic cells in a diploid organism typically have a certain amount of DNA, known as the 2C content, representing two sets of chromosomes. Gametes, such as sperm and egg cells, are haploid and contain half this amount, the 1C content.

During the cell cycle, the DNA content changes. Before DNA replication in the S phase, a cell is in the G1 phase and has its 2C content. After replication, in the G2 phase and during mitosis before anaphase, the cell has doubled its DNA content to 4C, as each chromosome now consists of two sister chromatids. Once sister chromatids separate during anaphase, the cell temporarily has a 4C content before dividing into two daughter cells, each returning to the 2C state.

In polyploid organisms, which have more than two sets of chromosomes, the DNA content will be a multiple of the haploid genome size. Measuring DNA content is a crucial technique in various biological fields, including cell biology, genetics, and evolution, helping to understand ploidy levels, cell cycle progression, and evolutionary relationships.
