Csoportelméleti is a Hungarian term that translates to "group theory" in English. Group theory is a branch of abstract algebra that studies algebraic structures known as groups. A group is a set equipped with a binary operation that satisfies four fundamental properties: closure, associativity, identity element, and inverse element.

The study of groups began with mathematicians like Joseph Louis Lagrange and Évariste Galois in the 19th century, who were investigating the solutions of polynomial equations. Galois theory, which connects the solvability of polynomial equations to the properties of permutation groups, is a prime example of the power and scope of group theory.
