This exchange typically happens during prophase I of meiosis.

The process begins when homologous chromosomes pair up. Enzymes then create breaks in the DNA strands of each chromosome at corresponding points. Segments of these broken DNA strands are then exchanged between the homologous chromosomes. This means that a portion of one chromosome is swapped for a similar portion of its partner. The broken DNA ends are then repaired, rejoining the exchanged segments.
