Compoundleaved

Compoundleaved refers to a leaf structure in plants where the blade is divided into multiple distinct leaflets, all attached to a common petiole or stem. This is in contrast to a simple leaf, which has an undivided blade. The arrangement of leaflets on the petiole can vary, leading to different types of compound leaves.

Pinnately compound leaves have leaflets arranged along the sides of the petiole, resembling a feather. They can be further classified as even-pinnate, where leaflets occur in pairs, or odd-pinnate, where there is a terminal leaflet at the tip of the petiole. Examples include ash and walnut trees.

Palmately compound leaves have leaflets radiating from a single point at the end of the petiole, like the fingers of a hand. Examples include plants in the genus Lupinus and horse chestnut.

Bipinnately compound leaves, also known as doubly compound leaves, are even more complex. In these leaves, the primary petiole is divided into secondary petioles, each bearing leaflets. This structure is found in plants like the Mimosa tree.

The presence of compound leaves can serve various ecological advantages. They may allow for better light penetration to lower leaves, reduce wind resistance, or aid in water runoff. The specific form of a compound leaf is a characteristic feature used in plant identification.
