Cell surface refers to the outer boundary of a cell and the immediate extracellular layer that interacts with the environment. In most eukaryotic cells, this boundary is the plasma membrane, a phospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates. In many organisms, additional layers such as the cell wall (in plants, fungi, and some algae) or a bacterial cell envelope contribute to the cell surface architecture. The cell surface is not a simple barrier; it is a dynamic interface that mediates communication, transport, adhesion, and recognition.

Components of the cell surface include the plasma membrane, which provides selective permeability and hosts transport systems such as channels, carriers, and pumps, as well as receptors that detect signals. The glycocalyx, a carbohydrate-rich layer on the cell surface, participates in cell recognition and protection. In plant cells, the cell wall adds stiffness and porosity. Bacteria and some archaea have envelopes that include peptidoglycan, and Gram-negative bacteria possess an outer membrane with porins and lipopolysaccharides, contributing to surface properties and interactions.

Functions of the cell surface encompass signaling, endocytosis, exocytosis, and immune interactions. Adhesion molecules enable cells to attach to other cells or to the extracellular matrix, coordinating tissue organization. Surface composition can influence development, responses to environmental cues, and susceptibility to pathogens. Abnormalities in surface receptors or glycosylation can contribute to disease states, including cancer and infectious diseases. Research into the cell surface—through proteomics, glycomics, and imaging—aims to elucidate cellular communication and to inform therapeutic targeting.
