Celledifferensieringsløpet refers to the biological process by which a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type. This occurs multiple times during the development of a multicellular organism as the organism changes from a simple to a complex system. Cell differentiation is a fundamental process in biology. It allows a single zygote to develop into a complex organism with many different cell types, each performing specific functions.

The process begins with totipotent stem cells, which have the potential to differentiate into any cell type, including extraembryonic tissues. As development progresses, cells become pluripotent, able to differentiate into any of the three germ layers of the embryo (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm), but not into extraembryonic tissues. Later stages involve multipotent stem cells, which can differentiate into a limited range of cell types within a specific lineage, and unipotent stem cells, which can only differentiate into one cell type.

During differentiation, cells undergo changes in gene expression, leading to the production of specific proteins that determine their structure and function. This process is tightly regulated by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental signals. Environmental signals can include chemical signals from other cells or physical cues from the surrounding tissue. Understanding cell differentiation is crucial for fields like developmental biology, regenerative medicine, and cancer research.
