Calistii

Calistii were a group of ancient Germanic tribes who inhabited the region of modern-day Germany and the Netherlands during the Iron Age. They are first mentioned in the works of the Roman historian Tacitus, who described them as one of the tribes that formed the confederation of the Batavi. The Calistii are believed to have lived in the area around the Rhine River and the Maas River, which were important trade routes during that time.

The Calistii are known for their participation in the Batavian Revolt against Roman rule in the early 2nd century AD. This revolt was a significant event in Roman history, as it marked the first major uprising by a Germanic tribe against Roman authority. The Calistii, along with other Batavian tribes, fought against the Roman legions, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and the Batavian confederation was eventually suppressed by the Romans.

The Calistii are not mentioned in any significant historical sources after the Batavian Revolt. It is possible that they were assimilated into other Germanic tribes or that their identity was lost over time. However, their legacy lives on in the name of the modern Dutch province of Gelderland, which was once part of the Batavian confederation and is believed to have been named after the Calistii.
