CLP-merkinnät, or Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) markings, are a standardized system used in the European Union to communicate the hazards of chemical substances and mixtures. This system aligns with the United Nations' Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The primary purpose of CLP markings is to protect human health and the environment by informing users about potential risks and how to handle products safely.

These markings consist of several key elements. Hazard pictograms are graphical symbols that convey specific hazard information at a glance. Examples include pictograms for explosive, flammable, toxic, or corrosive substances. Signal words, such as "Danger" or "Warning," indicate the severity of the hazard. Hazard statements (H-statements) provide a standardized description of the nature of the hazard. Precautionary statements (P-statements) offer advice on measures to prevent or minimize adverse effects from exposure, storage, handling, and disposal.

The CLP regulation mandates that manufacturers, importers, and downstream users classify their substances and mixtures according to the CLP criteria. They must then label their products accordingly before placing them on the market. This ensures that consumers, workers, and emergency responders have the necessary information to use and handle chemicals safely. The consistent application of CLP markings across the EU facilitates trade and enhances safety standards throughout the supply chain.
