C3bkomponentti refers to the C3b fragment of the third complement protein, C3. The complement system is a crucial part of the innate immune system, and C3 is a central protein within this cascade. When C3 is activated, it cleaves into two fragments: C3a and C3b. C3b is the larger fragment and plays a pivotal role in initiating and amplifying complement activation.

The primary functions of C3b include opsonization, which is the process of marking pathogens for phagocytosis by immune cells. C3b binds covalently to the surface of bacteria, viruses, or other foreign particles, making them more easily recognized and engulfed by phagocytes such as macrophages and neutrophils. Additionally, C3b is essential for the formation of the C5 convertase enzyme, which is critical for the subsequent steps of complement activation, leading to the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC). The MAC can directly lyse target cells. C3b also participates in the amplification loop of complement activation, further cleaving more C3 molecules. Its presence on a target indicates that the complement system has been triggered, marking the entity for destruction by the immune system.
