Buynaksk

Buynaksk is a city in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, located at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. It is situated on the Karakoysu River, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of the Dagestani capital, Makhachkala. Buynaksk is one of the oldest cities in Dagestan and served as the administrative center of the Buynaksky District until it was made a city of republican subordination.

Historically, the area was inhabited by various peoples, and the settlement that grew into Buynaksk developed from a fortress founded by Russian forces in 1834, named Buinaksky or Fort Buynaksky. It was renamed Buynaksk in 1920. The city played a role during the Caucasian War and subsequent periods of Russian control. Its strategic location facilitated trade and military movements.

The economy of Buynaksk is primarily based on light industry and agriculture. Local enterprises are involved in food processing, textile production, and other manufacturing. The surrounding region is known for its fruit orchards and vineyards.
