Busra

Busra, also spelled Bosra, is a town in southern Syria, located in the Daraa Governorate near the border with Jordan. It is renowned for the Ancient City of Bosra, a historic urban center that preserves extensive Nabataean and Roman ruins.

The archaeological site features a monumental Roman theatre carved into natural basalt rock, dating from the 2nd century CE. It is regarded as one of the best-preserved theatres of its kind in the region. In addition to the theatre, the site includes remnants of ancient city walls, streets, and religious buildings from the Nabataean, Roman, and early Christian periods, illustrating a layered history of urban development.

In 1980, the Ancient City of Bosra was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, noted for its outstanding evidence of Nabataean and Roman urban planning and architecture in the Levant.

Today, Bosra remains an important location for archaeology and cultural tourism in southern Syria. The site draws scholars and visitors interested in the interplay of Nabataean, Roman, and early Christian heritage, and it continues to be the focal point of preservation efforts in the region.
