BuffersA are a type of biological molecule that helps maintain a stable pH in a solution. In biological systems, maintaining a narrow pH range is crucial for the proper functioning of enzymes and other cellular processes. Buffers achieve this by resisting changes in pH when small amounts of acids or bases are added.

A buffer solution typically consists of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. For example, the bicarbonate buffer system in blood involves carbonic acid and bicarbonate ions. When an acid is added to this system, the bicarbonate ions can accept the excess hydrogen ions, forming carbonic acid and thus minimizing the pH drop. Conversely, if a base is added, the carbonic acid can donate a hydrogen ion to neutralize it, preventing a significant rise in pH.

The buffering capacity of a solution refers to its ability to resist pH changes. This capacity is highest when the concentrations of the weak acid and its conjugate base are equal, which occurs at the pKa of the weak acid. Biological buffers are essential for life, ensuring that the internal environment of cells and organisms remains within a suitable pH range for biochemical reactions to occur efficiently. Without effective buffering systems, even minor metabolic processes could lead to drastic and potentially fatal pH fluctuations.
