Brøkstreken

Brøkstreken is the Norwegian term for the fraction bar. It is a horizontal line used in mathematics to separate the numerator of a fraction from its denominator. The numerator represents the number of parts being considered, while the denominator represents the total number of equal parts into which a whole is divided. For example, in the fraction 1/2, the brøkstreken clearly distinguishes the '1' (numerator) from the '2' (denominator).

The brøkstreken serves a similar function to the division symbol (÷). A fraction can be interpreted as an indication of division, where the numerator is divided by the denominator. Therefore, 1/2 can also be read as 1 divided by 2, which equals 0.5. This visual representation aids in understanding ratios, proportions, and parts of a whole.
