Bredningsmekanismen, often translated as the widening mechanism or broadening mechanism, refers to processes that contribute to the widening of spectral lines in astronomical observations. When light from a celestial object is analyzed, its spectral lines can appear broader than they would be if the source were perfectly stationary and uniform. This broadening provides valuable information about the physical conditions within the source.

Several phenomena can cause spectral line broadening. Doppler broadening is a primary contributor and arises from the random thermal motion of atoms or molecules within a gas. As particles move towards the observer, their emitted light is blueshifted, and as they move away, it is redshifted. The combination of these Doppler shifts across a population of particles results in a broader observed line. Another significant cause is turbulence, where bulk motions within the gas contribute to a range of Doppler shifts, leading to broadening.

Other mechanisms include pressure broadening (also known as collisional broadening), where collisions between particles perturb the energy levels of emitting or absorbing atoms, affecting the emitted photon's frequency. Gravitational redshift, though typically a smaller effect, can also contribute to broadening in very massive objects like white dwarfs or neutron stars. In astrophysical plasmas, Stark broadening, caused by the electric fields of charged particles, is a crucial mechanism, particularly for spectral lines of hydrogen and helium. Understanding these different broadening mechanisms is essential for accurately interpreting astronomical spectra and inferring properties such as temperature, density, velocity, and composition of celestial objects.
