Bloddannelse

Bloddannelse, also known as hematopoiesis, is the complex biological process by which all types of blood cells are produced. This process is continuous throughout an individual's life, beginning in the early stages of embryonic development and continuing into adulthood. In adults, the primary site of bloddannelse is the bone marrow, specifically the red bone marrow found in flat bones like the sternum, pelvis, and vertebrae, as well as the epiphyses of long bones.

The origin of all blood cells lies in a special type of cell called a hematopoietic stem cell (HSC). These are multipotent stem cells, meaning they have the capacity to differentiate into all types of blood cells, including red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). HSCs are responsible for replenishing the body's blood cell supply as older cells are naturally removed.

The differentiation process is tightly regulated by a variety of growth factors and cytokines, which act as signaling molecules. These signals guide HSCs down specific developmental pathways. For example, one pathway leads to the production of myeloid cells, which include red blood cells, granulocytes, monocytes, and platelets. Another pathway leads to the production of lymphoid cells, which include T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells.

Disruptions in bloddannelse can lead to various hematological disorders. Conditions like anemia result from a deficiency in red blood cells, while leukemia is characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal white blood cells.
