Bladhoudende
Bladhoudende is a Dutch adjective that translates to evergreen in English. It describes plants that retain their leaves throughout the year, as opposed to deciduous plants which shed their leaves seasonally. This characteristic is common in many coniferous trees and shrubs, such as pines, spruces, and firs, where the needles or scale-like leaves are adapted to survive winter conditions. However, the term bladhoudende also applies to certain broad-leaved plants, particularly in milder climates, like holly, rhododendrons, and some types of ivy. The ability to remain green year-round allows these plants to photosynthesize whenever conditions permit, giving them an advantage in environments with short growing seasons or nutrient-poor soils. The term is primarily used in botanical and horticultural contexts to classify and describe plant types.
