Biosolids are the nutrient-rich organic matter resulting from the treatment of sewage sludge. The term "biosolids" was officially adopted in the United States in 1997 to distinguish treated sewage sludge that meets specific regulatory standards for beneficial use from untreated sludge. These standards, established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ensure that biosolids are safe for application to land, used in manufactured products, or disposed of in landfills or incinerators.

The treatment process for biosolids typically involves several stages, including sedimentation, digestion (anaerobic or aerobic), dewatering, and stabilization. Digestion breaks down organic compounds and reduces pathogens. Dewatering removes excess water, making the material more manageable and reducing its volume. Stabilization further reduces odors and potential for disease transmission.

The primary beneficial use of biosolids is as a soil conditioner and fertilizer. They can improve soil structure, increase water retention, and provide essential nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus for plant growth. This application, known as land application, is carefully managed to prevent environmental contamination and protect public health. Biosolids can also be incorporated into compost, used in land reclamation projects, or even utilized in the manufacturing of certain products. However, certain contaminants may limit their use, and regulations govern the permissible levels of these substances.
