Bioenergialähteet refer to organic materials that can be used to produce energy. These sources are derived from plants and animals, and their energy is stored in chemical bonds. Bioenergy can be harnessed through various processes, including combustion, gasification, and anaerobic digestion.

Common bioenergy sources include wood and agricultural residues like straw and corn stalks. Animal waste, such as manure, is also a significant bioenergy resource. Crops specifically grown for energy, known as energy crops, are another category. Municipal solid waste, particularly its organic components, can also be utilized for bioenergy production.

The energy content of bioenergy sources varies depending on their composition and moisture content. When biomass is burned, it releases heat that can be used for heating or to generate electricity. Gasification converts biomass into a synthesis gas (syngas), which can then be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. Anaerobic digestion breaks down organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas, primarily methane and carbon dioxide, which can be used for heat and power.

Bioenergy is considered a renewable energy source because the organic materials can be replenished through natural processes or sustainable cultivation. However, the sustainability of bioenergy depends on responsible sourcing and management practices to avoid negative environmental impacts, such as deforestation or competition with food production.
