Bilingvális

Bilingvális is a term used in linguistics, education and social sciences to describe the presence or use of two languages by an individual, a group, or a context. In Hungarian usage, the adjective bilingvális describes someone who is proficient in two languages, or a setting in which two languages are used. The corresponding noun is rarely used; more common are kétnyelvűség or expressions referring to a bilingual environment.

Etymology and usage: the word is borrowed from English bilingual, which in turn derives from Latin bi- “two” and lingua “language.” In Hungarian, bilingvális is used to describe people, education programs, workplaces, and communities where two languages are actively used or acquired.

Types and dynamics: bilingualism can be simultaneous, when two languages are learned from birth, or sequential, when a second language is learned after the first. It can be balanced, with comparable proficiency in both languages, or dominant in one language. In education and policy, bilingualism is analyzed in terms of language use, maintenance of the heritage language, and potential additive or subtractive effects on language development.
