Bildeavbildning

Bildeavbildning, often translated as image formation, refers to the process by which an optical system creates a representation of an object. This process is fundamental to how we see and how many scientific and technological devices function, including cameras, telescopes, microscopes, and the human eye.

The core principle behind bildeavbildning involves the manipulation of light rays. When light reflects off an object, it travels in various directions. An optical system, such as a lens or a mirror, is designed to intercept these diverging rays and converge them to a specific point, forming an image. The nature of this image – whether it is real or virtual, inverted or upright, magnified or diminished – depends on the properties of the optical elements used, such as their curvature and refractive index.

A real image is formed when light rays actually converge at a point, and it can be projected onto a screen. A virtual image, on the other hand, appears to originate from a point but the rays do not actually converge there; it cannot be projected. The formation of both real and virtual images is governed by optical laws like the laws of reflection and refraction, and can be mathematically described using equations such as the lens maker's formula and the thin lens equation.
