Berguni

Berguni is a small municipality located in the Province of Cuneo in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. The town lies in a valley surrounded by the Ligurian Alps, at an altitude of approximately 750 meters above sea level. It covers an area of 12 square kilometres and, according to the most recent census, has a population of around 1,200 residents. The community is known for its close-knit social structure, which preserves traditional alpine customs and local festivals that celebrate the changing of the seasons.

The earliest documented records of Berguni date back to the 13th century, when it was referenced in feudal inventories of the Marquisate of Montferrat. Over the centuries it remained a modest agrarian settlement, with its economy historically based on dairy farming, viticulture, and the cultivation of mountain herbs. In the late 19th century, quarrying of local limestone provided a temporary boost to the local economy, but the industry declined in the 20th century as transportation networks improved and urban employment opportunities attracted younger generations.

Today, Berguni combines its rural heritage with modest tourism initiatives. The municipality maintains a network of hiking trails that connect it to neighbouring villages and serve as a gateway to scenic alpine peaks. Local governance is managed by a mayor and a municipal council elected quarterly, and the community continues to uphold agreements for the conservation of its natural environment and historical architecture.
