Beetalaktaamijärjestelmä refers to a class of antibiotics characterized by their shared core chemical structure, the beta-lactam ring. This ring is crucial for their mechanism of action, which involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Bacteria possess a rigid cell wall that provides structural integrity and protection, and many beta-lactam antibiotics work by interfering with the enzymes responsible for cross-linking the peptidoglycan layers of this wall. By disrupting this process, the antibiotic weakens the cell wall, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.

The beta-lactam class encompasses several major groups, including penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams. While they share the beta-lactam ring, their specific side chains and overall structures confer differences in their spectrum of activity, potency, and susceptibility to bacterial resistance mechanisms.
