Batchframleiðsla, also known as batch production, is a manufacturing method where products are produced in specific quantities or batches. Each batch goes through a particular stage of the manufacturing process before moving on to the next. This is in contrast to continuous production, where a product is manufactured without interruption, or project production, which is for unique, large-scale items.

In batch production, equipment and workstations are set up to produce a specific batch of a product. Once that batch is completed, the equipment may be cleaned and reconfigured to produce a different product or the next batch of the same product. This allows for greater flexibility in manufacturing, enabling companies to produce a variety of products using the same facilities. It is particularly suitable for industries that produce a range of items with varying demand, such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and beverages, and certain types of electronics.

The advantages of batch production include its flexibility, ability to handle diverse product lines, and often lower initial investment compared to highly automated continuous processes. However, it can lead to longer lead times and higher inventory costs if batches are not managed efficiently. The changeover time between batches can also impact overall production efficiency. Effective planning and scheduling are crucial for optimizing batch production processes.
