Basiliek
Basiliek is the Dutch term for basilica. In Catholic usage, a basilica is a church with special ceremonial rights and historical importance, designated by the Pope. There are two levels: major (maior) basilicas, all of which are in Rome, and minor (minor) basilicas found around the world. The four major basilicas in Rome are St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, and San Paolo fuori le mura. A church can be granted minor basilica status in recognition of its significance, pilgrimage value, or association with a saint or sacred relic. The status conveys a closer link with the Holy See and carries certain liturgical privileges, such as the right to display papal symbols and to celebrate liturgies with particular solemnity.
