Barrier koralliriutan, often referred to as a barrier reef, is a type of coral reef that runs parallel to a coastline but is separated from it by a lagoon. This lagoon can vary in width from a few hundred meters to many kilometers. Barrier reefs are distinguished from fringing reefs by this significant distance and the presence of the intervening body of water.

The formation of barrier reefs is a complex geological and biological process. Typically, they begin as fringing reefs that grow outwards from a landmass. As the landmass sinks or sea levels rise, the reef continues to grow upwards and outwards, maintaining its distance from the shore. Coral polyps, the tiny marine animals that build reefs, create calcium carbonate skeletons that accumulate over millennia, forming the massive structures characteristic of barrier reefs.

These ecosystems are incredibly biodiverse, supporting a vast array of marine life, including fish, invertebrates, and other organisms. They play a crucial role in coastal protection by absorbing wave energy, thus reducing erosion. Barrier reefs are also important for tourism and fisheries in many coastal regions. The Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia, is the world's largest and most famous example of a barrier coral reef system. Other notable barrier reefs include the Belize Barrier Reef and the New Caledonian Barrier Reef.
