Balancing selection is a mode of natural selection that maintains multiple alleles, or genetic variations, at a locus within a population. Unlike directional selection, which favors one extreme phenotype, or purifying selection, which removes deleterious alleles, balancing selection preserves genetic diversity. This preservation occurs because different alleles are advantageous under different circumstances or in different combinations.
