Babits

Babits is a Hungarian surname, most notably associated with Mihály Babits (1883–1941), a central figure in modern Hungarian literature. He was a poet, translator, and essayist who helped shape the Nyugat generation, a circle of writers and editors around the influential literary magazine Nyugat in the early 20th century.

Born in Szekszárd, Babits studied at the University of Budapest and became a leading contributor and editor for Nyugat. His poetry is characterized by formal craftsmanship, philosophical inquiry, and the use of classical allusions and religious imagery to explore themes such as time, fate, and moral responsibility. In addition to original poetry, he produced translations from Latin, German, and English, helping to bring international literature to Hungarian readers.
