BOMIs
Bomis is a company founded by Jimmy Wales and Tim Hull in 1996. Initially, it was an internet advertising company that operated several websites, including search engines and directories. Its most notable early venture was the creation of the early web portal Bomis.com. The company gained significant recognition as the incubator for Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Jimmy Wales launched Wikipedia in 2001, and while Bomis initially provided some support, Wikipedia quickly evolved into an independent and volunteer-driven project. Bomis ceased operations in 2001, having been dissolved by its founders. The legacy of Bomis is primarily tied to its role in the genesis of Wikipedia, which became one of the most influential and widely used online resources in the world. The company's brief existence marked a significant point in the early development of internet-based collaborative projects.
