Aðalhlutverk

Aðalhlutverk denotes the leading or main character in a work of drama, film, television, or literature. The term combines aðal (main, principal) and hlutverk (part, role), and it identifies the character around whom the narrative centers. The lead character typically experiences the central conflict, undergoes a significant character arc, and drives the plot through their choices and actions.

Leads are usually afforded the greatest on-screen or on-stage time and most attention in the script, marketing materials, and critical reception. They interact with other characters, including those with supporting roles, and may face the story's primary stakes and themes. The portrayal requires sustained development and consistency to maintain audience engagement.

Production practices vary; in theatre, a single lead may share billing with co-leads or have a long arc across many performances. In film and television, there may be one primary lead or multiple leads sharing the spotlight in an ensemble structure; the terms 'lead' and 'supporting' are used in casting to allocate screen time and compensation, scheduling, and promotional emphasis.

In Icelandic usage, aðalhlutverk is a standard term across media and is used in reviews, casting announcements, and educational contexts to denote the central character.

Not every narrative has a single sole lead; some works employ dual leads or an ensemble cast where several characters share the principal storyline.
