Avnery
Avnery is a Hebrew surname. The most notable bearer is Uri Avnery (1923–2018), an Israeli journalist, writer, and peace activist who became a leading voice in discussions of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Avnery campaigned for reconciliation and a two-state solution, and in 1993 founded the peace organization Gush Shalom. Through his journalism and essays, he addressed issues of occupation, democracy, and civil rights in Israel, and he remained an active commentator well into his later years. The surname is used by others in Israel and among Jewish communities abroad, and transliterations may vary, including Avineri or Avneri. Avnery’s life and work are frequently cited in discussions of Israeli dissent and pacifist activism in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
