Austria-Hungary, officially known as the Kingdom of Hungary and the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen, was a dual monarchy that existed from 1867 until its dissolution in 1918. It was a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, which transformed the former Austrian Empire into a federated state consisting of two autonomous halves: the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. This arrangement allowed Hungary to maintain its own government, military, and economic policies while sharing a common monarch, foreign policy, and defense with Austria.
