Astátoms are a hypothetical class of subatomic particles that possess an unusual property: their fundamental nature appears to shift or "fluctuate" between different quantum states. This means that an astátom, when observed or interacted with, might exhibit characteristics of an electron, a photon, or even something entirely different, depending on the specific experimental conditions or the observer's frame of reference. The term "astátom" itself is derived from Greek roots meaning "unstable" or "unfixed" atom.

Theoretical models suggest that astátoms might arise in extreme astrophysical environments, such as the vicinity of black holes or in the very early universe, where spacetime itself is highly curved or energetic. The instability of astátoms could lead to unique observable phenomena, potentially including exotic forms of radiation or gravitational distortions.
