Articulants

Articulants is a plural noun used in several disciplines to denote agents, components, or features that enable articulation or joint action within a system. The term is not part of everyday vocabulary and its precise meaning varies by field. In general, an articulant is something that connects parts and allows controlled movement or interaction.

In biology and biomechanics, articulants include tissues or devices participating in a joint's articulation, such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and synovial fluid, as well as components of artificial joints that permit relative movement between bones.

In engineering and mechanical design, articulants are components that permit articulated motion between connected parts. Typical examples are hinges, pins, rivets, universal joints, and sliding guides, as well as linkages that transmit motion while allowing rotation or flexion.

In linguistics, articulants may refer to sounds produced through articulation, notably consonants and semivowels. However, the term is not widespread in modern phonetics, where terms like consonantal sounds, obstruents, or sonorants are more common.

Etymology and usage: The word derives from Latin articulare 'to join, to declare.' It appears in older technical literature and cross-disciplinary glossaries; contemporary writers usually favor more specific terminology tailored to a field.
