Armauer

Armauer is a masculine given name of Norwegian origin. It is a historical and rare name, with most attestations appearing in the 19th century and few in modern records. The etymology of Armauer is not widely documented, and it does not appear as a common component of contemporary Norwegian naming practice.

The best known bearer of the name is Armauer Hansen (1849–1897), a Norwegian physician who, in 1873, identified the bacterium responsible for leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae. His work helped establish a microbial understanding of leprosy and contributed to the early development of bacteriology. The disease is sometimes referred to as Hansen's disease in recognition of his findings.

Because Armauer is a rare given name, there are few widely cited individuals other than Hansen. In modern contexts the name's presence is mainly historical, appearing in biographical accounts of Hansen or discussions of Norwegian medical history.
