Argumentumstruktúra is a Latin term that translates to "argument structure." It refers to the underlying framework or organization of an argument. This includes the relationship between its premises, which are the statements or evidence offered, and its conclusion, which is the claim being supported. Understanding argument structure is crucial for evaluating the validity and soundness of reasoning.

A common type of argument structure is deductive, where the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises. If the premises are true and the structure is valid, then the conclusion must also be true. Another type is inductive, where the premises provide support for the conclusion, but the conclusion is not guaranteed to be true. Instead, the premises make the conclusion probable.

Key components of argument structure include identifying the main claim, the reasons given to support that claim, and any underlying assumptions that connect the reasons to the claim. Analyzing these elements helps to determine if an argument is logical and persuasive. For example, in a simple deductive argument, one might see a structure like: All men are mortal (premise 1). Socrates is a man (premise 2). Therefore, Socrates is mortal (conclusion). The structure here is straightforward, and if the premises are accepted, the conclusion is unavoidable. In contrast, an inductive argument might observe that every swan observed so far is white, leading to the conclusion that all swans are white. While the premise is based on observation, the conclusion is a generalization and could be false if a non-white swan is discovered.
