Archimedes screw, also known as a water screw or screw pump, is a machine used for transferring bulk solid materials (such as powder, grains, or fertilizer) or liquids (such as water or sewage) from a lower elevation to a higher one. It is named after Archimedes of Syracuse, who reportedly described and used it in the 3rd century BC. The device consists of a helical surface (screw) coaxially mounted on a shaft, which is rotated. The screw is placed at an angle inside a hollow tube or cylinder, and its lower end is submerged in the material to be transported. As the screw rotates, its helical surfaces scoop up the material, and the rotation lifts it up the inclined tube. The efficiency of the Archimedes screw depends on factors such as the angle of inclination, the diameter of the screw and tube, and the speed of rotation. It is a simple yet effective device that has been used for centuries in various applications, including irrigation, drainage, and material handling in industrial processes. Modern versions are often made of metal and are powered by electric motors, but the fundamental principle remains the same as the ancient design.
