ArchanesAsteroúsia

Archanes Asteroúsia is a municipality in the Heraklion regional unit of Crete, Greece. It is located in the southern part of the island, nestled between the Ida mountains and the Asterousia Mountains. The municipality was formed in 2011 as part of the Kallikratis reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Archanes, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Krousonas. Its administrative center is the town of Archanes.

The region is known for its rich history and archaeological significance. The area around Archanes has been inhabited since the Minoan era, with notable archaeological sites such as the ancient palace of Archanes, considered a significant Minoan center. The Nikos Kazantzakis municipality within Archanes Asteroúsia is named after the famous Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, who was born in the village of Varvari (now known as Nikos Kazantzakis).
