Arang

Arang is a term that can refer to several distinct things in Asian contexts.

In Indonesian and Malay, arang means charcoal, the carbon-rich material produced by heating wood or other organic matter in a low-oxygen environment. It is used as fuel for cooking and heating and comes in forms such as lump charcoal and briquettes. The word is common in everyday language and in commerce for charcoal products.

In Korean folklore, Arang refers to the name of a central figure in the legend Arang and the Magistrate. The tale concerns a young woman whose death leads to a restless ghost that haunts a town; a local magistrate investigates the haunting and, through ritual and reconciliation, helps lay the spirit to rest. The story has roots in Joseon-era folk belief and has remained influential in Korean cultural imagination.

In modern media, Arang appears in the 2012 South Korean television series Arang and the Magistrate, which adapts the legend into a fantasy-mystery drama. The series follows a magistrate and Arang’s spirit as they solve mysteries and confront injustices in a historical setting, blending elements of romance, mystery, and folklore.
