They are among the most important tools in modern medicine, significantly reducing mortality from infectious diseases since their discovery.

The term "antibiotisches" originates from the Greek words "anti" meaning "against" and "bios" meaning "life," emphasizing their role in combating microbial life forms. Antibiotics can be naturally occurring, derived from microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria, or synthetically produced. Common natural sources include the Penicillium fungi, which produces penicillin—the first widely used antibiotic.

This specificity allows them to effectively eliminate bacteria while minimizing harm to human cells.
