Antifouling coatings, also known as antifouling paints or antifoulants, are specialized surface treatments designed to prevent the accumulation of marine organisms on submerged structures. This fouling, primarily by algae, barnacles, mussels, and other sessile invertebrates, can significantly degrade the performance and structural integrity of vessels, offshore platforms, and other underwater equipment. Antifouling coatings work by either creating a surface that is toxic to settling organisms or by reducing the adhesion of fouling.

The primary mechanism of action for many antifouling coatings involves the controlled release of biocides. These chemicals, often copper-based compounds or organic biocides, are slowly leached into the surrounding water, creating a microenvironment that is inhospitable to marine larvae and spores. Once these organisms attempt to attach, they are killed or repelled before they can establish a significant colony. Another common type is foul-release coatings, which create a very smooth, slippery surface. Organisms may attach briefly but are then dislodged by the movement of water or the vessel itself.

The development of effective and environmentally responsible antifouling coatings is an ongoing area of research. Traditional biocidal paints have faced scrutiny due to the potential for harmful substances to enter marine ecosystems. Consequently, there is a growing emphasis on developing more sustainable alternatives, including self-polishing copolymers that release biocides more effectively, biocide-free foul-release technologies, and coatings inspired by natural antifouling surfaces, such as those found on shark skin. Proper application and maintenance of antifouling coatings are crucial for their long-term effectiveness and to minimize environmental impact.
