Ammiiniryhmään

Ammiiniryhmään, or the amine group, is a functional group in organic chemistry characterized by a nitrogen atom bonded to one or more alkyl or aryl groups. The general formula for an amine group is R_nNH_{3-n}, where R represents an organic substituent and n can range from 1 to 3. The presence of the amine group imparts unique chemical properties to molecules.

Amines are classified based on the number of organic substituents attached to the nitrogen atom. Primary amines have one R group (RNH2), secondary amines have two R groups (R2NH), and tertiary amines have three R groups (R3N). Quaternary ammonium salts are formed when the nitrogen atom is bonded to four organic groups, carrying a positive charge.

The nitrogen atom in an amine group has a lone pair of electrons, which makes amines basic. They can accept a proton (H+) from an acid, forming a conjugate acid. This basicity is a fundamental property that influences their reactivity and their role in biological systems. Amines are also nucleophilic due to the lone pair, enabling them to participate in various chemical reactions, such as alkylation and acylation.

Amines are ubiquitous in nature and play vital roles in biological processes.
