Amfoteerisista refers to substances that can act as both an acid and a base. This dual nature allows them to react with both strong acids and strong bases. The term "amphoteric" originates from the Greek word "amphoteros," meaning "both."

A classic example of an amphoteric substance is water. Water can donate a proton (acting as an acid) to form a hydroxide ion (OH-) and a hydronium ion (H3O+). Conversely, it can accept a proton (acting as a base) from an acid to form a hydronium ion. Another well-known example is aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3). It can react with acids to form aluminum salts and water, and it can also react with strong bases to form soluble aluminate complexes.

The amphoteric nature of a substance is typically dependent on the conditions. For instance, amino acids are amphoteric because they contain both an acidic carboxyl group (-COOH) and a basic amino group (-NH2). In a neutral solution, they exist as zwitterions, with a positive charge on the amino group and a negative charge on the carboxyl group. In acidic conditions, the amino group becomes protonated, and in basic conditions, the carboxyl group loses its proton.

Understanding amphoteric substances is crucial in various fields, including chemistry, biology, and materials science. Their ability to interact with both acidic and basic environments makes them useful in buffering systems, metal processing, and the design of new materials with specific chemical properties. The pH at which an amphoteric substance exhibits its zwitterionic form is called its isoelectric point.
